Course Requirements

The IGERT program does not typically add any course load on top of the total course load (credit-wise) of the participating graduate programs. However, the IGERT program does require fellows to broaden their horizons by taking two cross-disciplinary core courses and up to three newly developed integrative courses. These courses can be treated as the graduate electives for the home graduate programs, so the average student will not need to take any extra courses beyond their PhD course requirements. One short course on communications, ethics, and grant-writing is also required. See specific course breakdown below.

As summarized above, all IGERT Fellows will be required to take at least five graduate courses and a sixth special course as part of the IGERT requirement. The five graduate courses should comprise two established courses in Physical Sciences (physics, chemistry, materials science), Life Sciences (molecular biosciences, cell biology), or Engineering Sciences, plus three interdisciplinary courses, which are focused on stem cell science. The two established courses should be from a different disciplinary area than that of the student's graduate program. For example, an Engineering student can choose at least two courses from Life Sciences or Physical Sciences.
